Accidental blast kills 3 gold panners in Philippines, army says

11/08/2010 - MANILA, Philippines — An army officer says three gold miners in the central Philippines have died after a bomb they were making exploded.

Army Lt. Col. Anthony Puruggannan said Monday that the three men were preparing the illegal explosives to blast underwater rocks to help them obtain the precious metal by panning.

Puruggannan said one of the miners detonated the bomb accidentally at home in the impoverished township of Aroroy in Masbate province on Saturday, killing himself and a brother. A third gold panner was wounded and died on the way to hospital.

The army and police say they are now cracking down on such bomb makers in the region.(The Canadian Press)
