Binay takes oath as housing czar

07/21/2010 - PRESIDENT Benigno Aquino III administered on Tuesday the oath of Vice President Jejomar Binay as chairman of the Housing and Urban Development Coordinating Council (HUDCC).

Binay was accompanied by his wife Elenita, daughter Abigail Binay-Campos, and son Makati Mayor Jejomar Erwin "JunJun" Binay during the oath taking ceremony at Rizal Hall in Malacaรฑang.

The Vice President is tasked to oversee the activities of the government housing agencies to ensure the accomplishment of the National Shelter Program.

His assignment includes formulating national objectives for housing and urban development, and designing broad strategies for accomplishment of these objectives.

The HUDCC chair would also assist in the maximum participation of the private sector in all aspects of housing and urban development.

He can also recommend new legislation and amendments to existing laws as may be necessary for the attainment of the government's objective in housing.

On task force for OFW

An alliance of migrant rights group on Tuesday welcomed the possible appointment of Binay as head of a task force for overseas Filipino workers (OFW).

"Vice President Binay is not a bad choice. But it's too early to tell if he could perfectly carry out a tough job alleviating OFWs from their dire situations and deplorable conditions abroad," said John Leonard Monterona, Migrante-Middle East regional coordinator.

"OFW and their families would feel a relief to see a real 'doer' and 'action man' in attending their issues and concerns," he added.

But he expressed apprehension that if Binay's appointment pushes through, he would be facing institutional constraints as the task force will be under the Office of the President.

Monterona said it is very important that the task force goals must be responsive to the needs and concerns of OFWs.

"The OFWs task force must not just a mere creation due to political necessity or consideration in pretense of having a unified administration," he noted
