'Basyang' death toll reaches 26

07/16/2010 - CONTINUING search and rescue operations recovered three more bodies off the coasts of Polilio Island in Quezon province, pegging the death toll of Typhoon Basyang to 26.

Of the fatalities, the National Disaster Coordinating Council (NDCC) said three were from Ilocos Region, three from Bicol Region, and 20 from the Calabarzon.

Some were reported to have drowned while others were electrocuted. Most of the fatalities were hit by fallen tree debris as a result of the strong winds brought about by the typhoon.

The NDCC also recorded that 14 persons were injured while 26 others were missing, among them are crew members of fishing vessel Alicia that sunk in the coast off Mariveles in Bataan.

Some 920 houses were totally damaged and another 10,018 were partially damaged. A total of 54 evacuation centers serve as temporary shelter for 1,946 families in the affected regions.

The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) has already prepositioned P106 million standby funds and P135 million worth of relief supplies in all its field offices in Central Luzon, Calabarzon, Bicol Region, and the National Capital Region.

The Bureau of Fire Protection has been conducting water rationing and assisting in bringing affected families to the evacuation areas.

The clearing operations along roads and highways blocked by fallen trees and toppled electric posts are still conducted by the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) along with the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA).

The estimated cost of damage to infrastructure, agriculture, fisheries and schools in Regions IV-A, V and NCR is estimated at P23.696 million.

The latest update of the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration shows that Basyang has left the country and no tropical cyclone exists in the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR).

A ridge of High Pressure Area (HPA) in Luzon will bring partly cloudy skies with isolated rainshowers or thunderstorms in the afternoon or evening throughout the country. ( Sunstar)
